Islanders big boost to shoebox appeal

The Arran community has once again demonstrated its compassion by contributing to a successful Blythswood Shoebox Appeal which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Since the first appeal more than 2.5 million boxes have been distributed in schools, hospitals, orphanages and care homes, and to households in very low-income communities, including to people affected by the war in Ukraine.

This year, Arran residents donated 86 filled shoeboxes and around £300 in donations which were delivered to Fullarton Church, Irvine where shoeboxes from all around Ayrshire are packaged into cartons for onward movement primarily to Eastern Europe and Asia.

Those who are already looking to contribute to next year’s appeal can start collecting shoeboxes (ideally 16cm x 12cm in width and height) which can be dropped off in the vestibule at Brodick Church at any time. The church will be happy to store them until next year.

Knitters hoping to contribute can also start their efforts early by starting work on scarves and gloves and hats. The church still has some surplus hats from this year which will be retained until the next appeal.
