More lifeguards still needed at MACPool

A recruitment drive has helped to find new potential lifeguards for Mid Argyll Community Pool – but not enough to open seven days a week.

Staff shortages mean that the Lochgilphead pool has been forced to close on a Friday for several months.

And it recently took the additional measure of shutting between 3-4pm for an hour on weekdays.

Facing the unhappy possibility of having to cut back even more hours, a recruitment afternoon was organised on Sunday November 12.

Members of the public were invited along to find out about working there.

John Gurr, chairman of MACPool, said: “Like many businesses in our region we are struggling to find people who would like to work at the pool.

“On Sunday November 12 we held a recruitment afternoon where anyone interested in joining our team could speak to a member of staff about working at the pool.

“We had a successful afternoon and are interviewing a number of candidates which if successful will help the pool fill two key roles and will help enormously. We are still some way from having a full team to provide longer opening hours and support the needs of our community.”

There are still several jobs up for grabs and people are being urged to get in touch if they are interested.

Alida Achermann is the newly employed MACPool activity hub manager.

She said “Since starting at MACPool two weeks ago I have been made to feel very welcome. I am pleased we have a couple of strong candidates to become lifeguards but would like to get the pool open seven days a week, with more activities and classes for all abilities, so we still have a number of vacancies to fill.

“If you know of anyone who would like to start a career in the leisure industry or if you have some weekday or early mornings free and would like to support your local pool, we would like to hear from you.

“For details of all vacancies, and our opening hours please see our website at www.macpool.org.uk. ”
