Boy oh boy! Oban sure is bonny

This wee fella is so bonny that naming him Oban after their favourite holiday spot was a perfect fit for his Yorkshire mum and dad.

“Just one look and we knew it was the name for him,” said new mum Lynda Phillips who fell in love with the town on a family daytrip several years ago.

“We just love coming to Oban; we try to come up a couple of times a year. It seems a perfect place, everyone is so friendly. We’d talked about calling him after the town but didn’t know if we were brave enough to give him such a unique name but as soon as we saw him, we just knew it was perfect because he was so bonny,” said Lynda.

Oban’s middle name is Torrin, Gaelic for brave one, another fitting choice for the tot whose start in life was not the easiest.

When he was born on September 21 there were complications with his oesophagus and small intestines which meant he had to be blue-lighted from a rural hospital to the city neo-natal unit in Leeds where he had three operations in just two weeks before eventually being allowed home to Guiseley where his older siblings Ewan, aged 14, and Isla 12, from dad Rob Baker’s previous relationship, dote on him.

“They dote on him too; they love that he’s called Oban. They love it there too,” said Lynda who got engaged to Rob on Mull with plans to marry next summer and a honeymoon in, no surprise, Oban, with a trip over to Iona for its new music festival also a possibility.

Oban has even been complimented on his name by BBC Radio 2 DJ Sarah Cox live on air, after Lynda asked for a shout-out for the wonderful staff at Leeds General Infirmary who looked after him.

“We’ve had so many lovely comments from people after we put up a Facebook post introducing Oban to Oban. We can’t wait to introduce him in person next year,” added Lynda.
