James Muir on trial with St Johnstone

Oban Saints’ youngster James Muir is having trials with Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone.

James, who has been playing in the Oban Saints first team this season, has been training with the Perth club for the last month and played the full 90 minutes for the under 18 team last Friday night in a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle in Glasgow.

James, who has just turned 16, played in the unfamiliar role of left back but impressed St Johnstone Academy director Alistair Stevenson with his performance and will be named in the squad for games this week against Dundee and Ross County.

Oban Saints secretary David Buchanan said: ‘We are delighted with the progress James has made. He’s got the right attitude and listens to what the coaches tell him at training. He’s become a regular in our first team and has scored important goals for us.

‘The club’s aim is to progress Oban youngsters into the professional game. There are a lot of good young players in the area and we will certainly put them on the radar for senior clubs to have a look at.

‘We have an agreement with St Johnstone that we will recommend any young players from the Oban area for them to have a look at.

‘The Perth club is managed by an old friend of ours – former Dundee United, Hearts and Scotland manager Craig Levein who took Dundee United to the annual D & K Lafferty Cup Tournament in Oban on two occasions.’

Another Saints youngster doing well and on the brink of the first team is Zander Craik who is on the books of Kilmarnock.
