Phoenix trio take boxing hat-trick in Elgin

Lochaber Phoenix Boxers took the icy road to Elgin last week to take part in the local club’s show – competing in three bouts against their home boxers.

Kyle MacDonald won against Elgin’s Kurt Shaughnessy by split decision in a keenly contested bout.

Kyle showed a very disciplined performance, moving well throughout the bout and landing accurate, straight punches, whole still having tinwork really hard against a well matched opposition.

At the age of 12 Kyle was the youngest of the group and this was his first win and very well deserved one.

Next up was 17 year old Jamie Douglas who recently took a silver medal in the Scottish Novice Championships.

He too mixed and moved well, with some great head and footwork, getting in and out of range and delivering frequent combinations.

His inside work to the body also impressed in the hard fought bout against Lennon Porter, Jamie coming out on top with another split decision.

Ryan Cameron, who was also Caley Timber Boxer of the Night at the recent Nevis Centre Show, was the final Lochaber boxer to step into the ring, facing the home Club’s Calum Hunter.

Both fighters battled strongly, landing frequent big shots to the delight of the crowd. However, Ryan’s superior head movement helped hide get out of danger several times and finished strongly in the last round saw officials reward him with a unanimous win.

Coach, Aidan Donnelly said: “The boys boxed the skins off and showed so much skill and determination in the ring.

“The Elgin crowd were also really good and showed tremendous appreciation for our guys even though they beat their home boxers one after the other.

“None of them had an easy time but showed just how good they were. We were absolutely delighted at the results and the boys were flying high at such great performances.

“They should all be really proud of themselves.”

Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club hold training sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Juniors from 6-7pm and Seniors from 7-8pm. More details can be found on the club Facebook page.
