Santas spotted dashing through Campbeltown

Several Santas were spotted dashing through Campbeltown last Sunday in an effort to raise funds for a charity supporting the UK’s fire fighting community.

Police constables Scott McGowan and Stuart Newlands completed the Santa Dash wearing full uniform.

Among those who took part in Campbeltown Fire Station’s Santa Dash were police constables Scott McGowan and Stuart Newlands, wearing full uniform including boots, and Malcolm McMillan of Campbeltown Coastguard Rescue Team carrying a full search pack.

Although it was well supported by emergency services’ personnel, the event was open to the whole community and many runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, including parents pushing prams and buggies and some four-legged friends, joined in the festive fun.

Elaine McGeachy, running alongside her niece Jessica, pushed sons Owen and Jack in their buggy throughout the dash.

Although the weather was overcast and drizzly, nothing could dampen the spirits of the participants, many of whom were dressed up as reindeer, elves and, of course, Santas.

Eilidh Smith and Carol McEachran took part dressed as reindeer.

The dash kicked off from Campbeltown Ferry Terminal at 11am, taking participants along the path beside Quarry Green and back along Kilkerran Road, through the town centre and along the Esplanade and High Street towards the finish line at Campbeltown Fire Station on Lady Mary Row.

Walkers as well as runners were welcome to take part.

At the fire station, there was entertainment for youngsters and hot chocolate, teas and coffee to warm-up and refresh all participants.

Although the focus was on having fun and supporting a good cause, there were some winners, with PC McGowan the fastest emergency services member back to base and Oscar Parker the first under-16 home.

PC Scott McGowan won the prize for the first emergency service member to complete the course in uniform.

The event was held to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity which provides services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire service personnel and their families. The total amount raised by the Campbeltown event has not yet been revealed.

A Campbeltown Fire Station spokesperson said: “We would like to thank Tesco, Co-op, Cadenheads, and all those that donated to our event. Special mention to those that helped organise, support and marshall.

“Well done to all the winners, and to all the Santas, reindeer and elves that dashed through the wind and showers.

“On behalf of everyone at Campbeltown Fire Station, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.”
